Well I've decided that while it has certainly had it's advantages, it's been a little exhausting trying to keep up with two different blogs so with the winds of change blowing in 2011 (study, travel and maybe baby) I've decided to combine them over at FIRST HOUSE ON THE RIGHT where I've been writing for pleasure since July last year. Would love if you my loyal 22 followers would join me over there and thanks so much to those of you who already have! Many bloggers I admire have successfully combined their business and personal writing so I feel optimistic that I can do the same - wish me luck!

Well it's taken a bit but I've finally found my way back to Bloggington after the loveliest of lovely Christmas holidays. Crack out the champs we're already eleven days into this new year of ours. Really, where does the time go?!

Just before Christmas we added some new Lelbys bean furniture to our collection but I haven't had a chance to tell you about it. These stylish bean chairs are made from 100% cotton canvas and are designed to predominantly in tones of brown, taupe and navy to complement the colours of adult furnishings. As well as these, for the pink and blue traditionalists there is a chirpy damask collection.

Because today is the first Tuesday of November let me share our lovely cowboy lamp with you. Made entirely of porcelain, it's a little bit different and a little bit special. The bright artwork on the ceramic makes it quite a sophisticated touch for any boys room, and I've even had some customers purchase them for girls rooms that don't want to be too girly. They are 33cm tall, 28cm wide and enclosed on both sides. A really lovely piece that you don't see every day.

We have just got a new colour in of our little Birdhouse Alarm Clocks. They are not only a sweet way to add a pop of colour to a bedroom, they almost make it a pleasure to wake up. Instead of the bleeping of a regular alarm calling you be summoned out of slumber land by the chirping of forest birds. I'm serious. Mind you can switch it to the bleep if you are worried the little forest birds won't wake you up.

A few months ago the lovely Kate Nixon contacted us to borrow some bits and bobs for her shoot with BBC Good Food Magazine.

The October issue is out and what a lovely job she's done with her slumber party themed shoot.

So which P&P goodies were used in the shoot...there's Paris, from our Maileg family (lying on the floor in the bottom left corner of the photograph), Bea one of our Esthex dolls (her head is obscured by the round blurb, what a shame, but then she's had her fair of attention as she's had her picture taken a couple of times before). One of the girls is leaning up against our pink early bird bean bag from Cocoon Couture and that fabulous green beanie is one of our cute artish head threads.

IT'S ALL ABOUT ME

Two of the most popular items in our store are the lovely wooden name plaques and the world map print for boys (or girls). I think I know why - it's nice to be personal. There's something special about our own name, and whether we like to admit or not, it's nice to see it up in lights. (Can't get rid of the double-spacing in this paragraph grrrr).

The name plaques in retro inspired font are made from 16mm craft wood by a small creative company in regional Victoria. They are available in 8 different colours including red, apple green, lemon, white, navy blue and pink, though you can also custom request your own colour for a little bit more. They are $18 per letter and a lovely way to give someone a very special gift.

The customized world map is lovely for a bedroom or playroom. It is educational, non-gender specific (though it is such a lovely option for boys in our opinion) and fun for all ages. You choose the the name you would like to appear on the bottom of your map and it is printed on 160gsmarchival, chlorine free (ECF) and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) paper. They are 42cm wide by 29cm high and sell in our store for $48.00.

Here in Oz some of us have already started our school holidays and some of us are just about to. Not so for the little peeps of the European royal families. September tolls the end of the summer holidays and back to school.

STICK 'EM UP

Now there are wall stickers and there are wall stickers. For the most part I think the medium has been done to ad nauseam and we are all exhausted by their saturation. But they are a great way to spruce up a room, especially if you want a fresh look but don't want to repaint (or can't repaint because you're renting) and there are some really fabulous ones that stand out from the rabble.

I love trees so when I saw these I knew I had to have them for our store, ordering them soon so check back in a little while.

One of my friends has this in her daughter's room. The brightness of the colours and the modern lines are a lovely compliment to the pale pink decor and antique bed. May I also say, it is unbelievable easy to put on the wall and if you get it wrong and need to change an angle? Peel it off and take two, so easy. Unlike many of the current decals it does peel off with no fuss and no damage to your wall.

With the one kit you can do any of these designs.

I love the pale green of this one from The Wall Sticker Company and think it would look cute behind a cot (we're getting this in too so check back soon).

This morning when I caught up on all my blog reading I noticed that the lovely Mandy Sutcliffe has added wall stickers to her beautiful Belle & Boo collection and in true Mandy style, they are utterly delightful. Of course, the moment they are available here in Oz, we'll be getting these in store too.

I love options for little boys that aren't all snarl and gnarl but still very boyish.

I just adore this one, I think Boo may very well be the cutest rabbit ever.

Well, I've been back from Melbourne for a few days now and the trade show fairy dust is starting to settle. I've yet to sit down and go through all the catalogues and supplier notes I gathered and decide which of the numerous fabulous things I saw will be making their way to the shelves of P&P. WHAT'S THE TIME MISTER COW?

We pay homage to the classic cuckoo clock but with a delightful twist. On the hour an animal pops out of the little window and makes a sound - be it a baa, a bark or a quack. So much fun. And before you get worried about the ruckus continuing on through the night when the little ones are asleep, the Coo Clocks are fitted with light sensors that prevent the animals from doing their thing during the dark. Brilliant, I hear you say.

...absolutely delightful. It's perfect in every way. Once seen, I knew I had to have it for the shop. It captures every detail of a childhood rite of passage but still charms in its simplicity. Like all of her prints, a nostalgic memory for an adult and beautiful picture to look at for a child. We have added two new Sarah Jane prints to our collection, both available in different variations depending on the room they're heading to or child they'll belong to.

Yes. you have guessed it, we are finally there. On Thursday afternoon last week we flung open the cyber doors on our new interiors collection and website. And may I say, I love it! Tish over at artish, has done a super job with our new look and I think it is safe to say, she is now sick of the sight and sound of me. It was a busy and frantic lead up to going live that's for sure!

Our new website is more simple and chic than ever (if you ask me). I love the new colour scheme and don't think I'll ever get tired of the beautiful new icons. Perfect in their simplicity (this is the launch post, so I'm allowed to rave a bit aren't I?!), I can't stop going to our home page to look at them. Now more than ever, we are dedicated to keeping our collection fresh and exciting and will be consistently adding new pieces to it.

We plan to bring you even more payment options in the not-too-distant-future as we want to be able to offer you a simplified direct deposit option and more credit card options. As well as that, we want to be able to tailor shipping rates specifically to your area if not postcode! In the meantime, Paypal continues to serve us well and we will certainly continue to offer it as the excellent option it is as well. (I know Paypal is my preferred payment method when shopping online).

But on to the fun stuff...our new products! Too many to talk about all at once so I'll start with a new favourite, the Bedtime Bus Roll Poster. "I just 'yuv it!", as my three year old nephew says when he loves something. It has to be the sweetest way ever to capture the all important bedtime routine, fitting that it comes to us from My Sweet Prints. Inspired by the vintage bus roll posters it is too delightful. Printed on 160gsm archival and chlorine free paper, this one is a keeper. The loveliest thing about is you can customise it to your own routine, mind you the thought of that is too overwhelming and you're a procrastinating perfectionist like me, our standard print is perfect. We are currently selling the print unframed but a framed option will soon be available too.

On that note, the cuppa in my bedtime routine is calling out to me so I am off. Sweet dreams everyone.

The May issue of InStyle is out (Gwen Stefani is rocking the cover) and this month they've included a bonus 40 pages of InStyle Homes. Actress Julie Bowen shows us through her spacious Los Angeles home for five.

I love this coffee table in Julie Bowen's living room.

Then there's the Melbourne home of MOR co-founder Deon St. Mor which is opulent and sophisticated but maybe a bit broody for me. Located in the top floor of an Art Deco building I should be crazy about it...and there are certainly aspects that are wonderful.

I do love his mirrored bar cabinets.

In an editorial for ideas on creating the look of St. Mor, InStyle suggests this glass ornament from Ruby Star Traders. And while I try not to get too carried away with ornaments that have little or not connection to me, there's just something about this little fella that makes me want to own him.

There's also the home of Alexia Gnecchi Ruscone and the design sourcing secrets of four of Australia's best stylists (I confess I only knew one but now I know them all). Naturally, there's the obligatory five pages of Domayne advertising - is it just me or has anyone else noticed that in the last little while (can't define 'little while' adequately) Domayne's accessories and decor have become so much more sensitive and diverse? Maybe it's just me, maybe I didn't know the collection intimately enough to start with. Maybe I've just become more sensitive and diverse in the last little while.

But I digress, the most exciting for us were the design secrets passed on to InStyle readers by the marvelous Megan Morton (wasn't going for alliteration but there you have it) recommends readers go to The Princess & The Pea for "sweet things for baby nurseries like bunny bookends in painted cast iron and toadstool seats". Thrilled doesn't cover it!

Some other stores I've checked out on her recommendation in the same article are Town & Country which have beautiful and distinct outdoor lighting and very handsome occasional tables! I must say I'm a chump for great occasional tables and can't wait to have a home large enough to scatter them around everywhere! I also had a look at Izzi and Popo which is a banquet of European and American collectibles you could spend hours devouring.

Rather exciting news

Thought it was time to tell you all that over the next few months we are refocusing the P&P collection to concentrate specifically on children's interiors. I'm so excited for the new focus as this is the part of our collection that I love the most and have the biggest thrill sourcing. We're also going to be carrying a small niche collection for grown-ups rooms. A new website will launched in a few months time and I couldn't be more eager (here's hoping that my multi-talented pal Tish is equally excited about the prospect as she's the graphics design gal!).

Naturally all of the lovely items currently in the room decor category, as well some of our special toys that we know look lovely on shelves or propped on the end of beds, will continue to be available as they are exactly the type of beautiful things we would like to find more of.

Of course with the new direction comes the news that MOST of our other toys, books, clothes & accessories won't be stocked again so it's a good idea to check out this icon throughout our website if you want to grab something that won't be back! Because I LOVE the Oscars and they are an annual ritual I look forward to them for the first few months of each and every year, this post is solely and utterly dedicated to them, no P&P correlation in sight (unless I play up the 'princess' angle of the female actors, no, it doesn't work). Of course, like all good award shows it starts with the red carpet and bottle of bubbly.

So my highlights and low lights...the out and out winner (and this is before she went on to be the actual out and out winner!) on the carpet was Sandra Bullock BY A COUNTRY MILE. No one came close, in my humble opinion. The dress was fabulous, she looked super sleek (even on my wide screen TV that stretched out a few of the other ladies eek) and definitely got the metallic is the look of the season memo. But what I loved the most was her hair and make-up. B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L, classic, Hollywood glamour at it's finest. And then her accessories, IE the earrings and purse were perfect in their understatement! Love, love, loved it.

I thought Meryl Streep looked lovely for a woman of a certain age (am I allowed to say that?). What I mean is, I thought she looked radiant and classy, with no mutton in sight. I love Meryl, and while I wanted the little gold man for Sandra, if anyone was to beat Sandy B, I wanted it to be Ms. Streep.

Now I am an unashamed, shout-it-from-the-mountain-tops SJP fan. I am die-hard. I launch to her defence if it even looks like someone might be thinking about sticking a knife in. I wanted to love her outfit, I really did and maybe on paper it works. Vintage Chanel, what's not to love? But the most I could muster, was I quite like it. There were parts of the outfit that I did love, like the be-jewelled neckline and her hairstyle (apart from wanting to take a brush to the fly-aways around her forehead). Maybe it's just that the dress is a little too shapeless or maybe that's the beauty of it and only someone like SJP could carry it off?! Who I am to judge, am sure Karl Lagerfeld knew what he was doing...

I also think Demi sans Ashton should get an honorable mention for her dress. I thought she looked lovely. I love the colour and the the frills! This picture definitley doesn't convey the gasp heard in the room of girlfriends when we were watching it this morning, we thought she looked fabulously age-defying!

So the low-lights, I have three that I'd like to mention...Jenny from the block what were you thinking? The fabric was tragic, like some sort of lining/plastic/foam/bubble wrap concoction, which of course it wasn't, but just terrible!

Then Diane Kruger, almost unrecognisable in this frothy disaster. Does anyone remember how chic she looked at the SAG awards. Crying shame.

And last and least...the beautiful Charlize Theron in a dress that looks like it was thrown together by a well meaning aunt for the Year 12 formal (who ran out of rouging material on the bodice so decided to just make two circles). Classy with a capital 'K. We've come to expect such big things from Charlize on the red carpet, maybe that makes it easier to disappoint.

Just before Christmas we were so excited to receive our first set of prints from Sarah Jane. They are one of the topics I've been wanting to blog about for awhile as I think they are so special and remind me of illustrations I recall from my own childhood. They're simple and sweet yet beautifully detailed and coloured. They are printed with archival pigment ink on heavy weight Hahnemuhle Museum etching paper that is 350gsm, natural white, 100% rag and acid free. I especially love the tea party prints, in fact my current mailing cards are also printed with one of the tea party themes. I sent one to a friend not so long ago and she's framing it to hang on the wall in her daughter's bedroom.

As it is always so much easier finding lovely things for girls rooms, and I dare I admit it - more fun eek - we're really striving to expand our range for the little fellas this year. In light of that, have to say I'm really liking SJ's new dinosaur print. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not crazy about pterodactyls strung from the ceiling or snarling jurassic-parkesque creatures scattered all over the floor but I do think I'd be very happy to put this print up on the wall and feel very much like I was participating in the theme...

My old wooden office chair literally gave way beneath me today...oh dear, what is it trying to tell me? Of course it is very, VERY old and so I'd like to think that the extra kgs I'm trying to drop didn't have too much to do with it (please no!)...so I'm on the hunt for another. Of course I'd love something like one of these wonderful presidents chairs...

As I sit at my desk looking at an unfinished note to someone that says "Even though it's already August I feel like I'm just starting to catch my breath...", I am completely overwhelmed by the notion that was August LAST YEAR when I wrote that and here we are in February 2010, and, may I say, in the latter half of Feb! Am horrified at how long it's been since I blogged (November 1, 2009) and it's taking a bit to get my mojo back!

In a nutshell, had a lovely and very relaxing Christmas, celebrated twice for good measure. Once, this side of the border with my family, and once south of the border with his family. Slowly got myself back into the swing of the shop this January and now right back in the thick of it...P&P has had the great fortune to be featured in some fabulous magazines over the last little while so I thought a breezy way to get back into blogging would be to show them off...

Well it seems my darling niece (I do realise I'm wearing rose coloured glasses, but really, isn't she just the SWEETEST thing!) is already teething. Poor gal. The good news is we've been able to try out first-hand our cute Sophie le girafe on her gums and let me say she loves it! Sophie, is hand-made in France in exactly the same way as when she was first produced in 1961. Not only is she lovely to look at and squeak she provides genuine relief for infants during teething. She is unbreakable and the only teething toy in the world made from 100% rubber and decorated with food paints. I just love her retro colours and lines, a real child of the Sixties...

Wondertime is wonderful

Last week I bought my first issue of Wondertime and I have to confess it was for narcissistic reasons - products from P&P featured on a number of pages. HOWEVER, as I hungrily flicked through the magazine looking for our products (yes, we're still new enough for editorial coverage to be a major deal, and to be honest, can't see the thrill wearing off!) I was hit with what a great magazine I was leafing through. Project Runway

I'm almost religious about Project Runway. After stumbling across it on a lazy night in several weeks ago, I have become steadfast. While the awkward and wooden delivery of host Kristy Hinze leaves me grimacing every time (why they didn't get someone like Sarah O'Hare who is fabulous on Australia's Next Top Model??), I am completely overwhelmed by the talent and resourcefulness of the designers, and can hardly wait for the finale. It's down to Anthony, Lauren and William. I think Anthony is a stand out for his originality but there's something very refined and sophisticated about the work of both Lauren and William. The game really does belong to anyone. Not quite the same thing I know, but every time the paper doll images cut across the Project Runway screen I'm reminded of our own lovely paper dollsmade by the B. Shackman Company who have been making fine paper goods since 1898. They are made from firm card and each come with several cute outfits to change into. They are perfect for road trips or just as a little extra something in a gift. Failing that, use them to stage your very own project runway. Now how's that for a segue?!

The Giving Tree

The Giving Tree

The Giving Tree, written by Shel Silverstein, tells the story of a relationship between a small boy and a tree in the forest with few words and simple drawings. The tree starts out as a leafy playground, shade and apple provider for the little chap. Making the boy happy makes the tree happy. But it gets more and more difficult to meet his increasingly demanding requests. His final wish is for a boat and the tree tells him to chop her down and make one from the wood. He does.

Since The Giving Tree was first published in 1964 it has generated controversy and opposing opinions for its interpreted messages - is the tree selfless or merely self sacrificing and is the boy selfish or reasonable in his demands? Either way The School Library Journal has ranked The Giving Tree in the top 100 books for children and it continues to intrigue generation after generation.

Not A Box

A small rabbit shows you are only limited by your imagination in this wonderful book written by Antoinette Portis who was inspired by the memory of sitting in a box on her driveway with her brother. A box is just a box...Unless it's not a box! Antoinette captures the thrill of when pretend feels so real that it actually becomes reality. Her simple, spare text and illustrations show that seeing really isn't believing!

In an interview with Powell's Books Antoinette was asked why she wrote for kids. Her response, "I write books for kids because when I was a kid, they were central to my life. Reading was my most favourite thing in the world. I always wanted to be part of the alchemy. To make something that would be part of children's memories the way so many books are a part of mine". I really like that, and it's a sentiment I can relate to. There are so many of my childhood memories tied to the books and stories I read.

Not a Box has won a number of awards including being named an ALA Notable Children's Book and a Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Book. It is a New York Times Bestseller and is listed as one of New York's Public Library "One Hundred Titles for Reading and Sharing". In her review for Not a Box, Amy Brozio-Andrews said "Not a Box presents a good opportunity for discussion, imagination, and interaction. Children and parents can guess what the bunny is pretending to be or do before turning the page. And perhaps most creatively of all, Not a Box, makes for a good jumping off point, in that kids can be inspired to looko at their own cardboard box and see more than a box. Even better, parents and kids can play "let's pretend" together".

I love this book and want it for all the little people in my life. From it's dedication, "To children everywhere sitting in cardboard boxes" to it's final simple illustration, Not a Box, is utterly adorable.

Follow the Line

Written by Laura Ljungkvist, Follow the Line is the journey of a line from the city to the country, from the sky to the ocean, from morning until night. Each scene contains questions designed to get children counting, thinking and observing. Young counters will enjoy following the very same line all the way through the book, from front to back.

Steven Heller in reviewing for the New York Times said that "Ljungkvist designed this book as a series of tableaus that allow readers to take a long journey, following an almost continuous linear thread as it moves from city to country, becoming everything from buildings and cars to trees and bushes, as well as all the flora and fauna in between...A brief narrative text set in typewriter type appears between the various figures. There are also enough empty visual and imaginative spaces to be filled in by young readers and their parents". To read his complete review click here.

Book Week

The 2009 theme is beautifully illustrated by 2008 winner, for Requiem For A Beast, Matt Ottley.

Every August the Children's Book Council of Australia brings us Book Week - the longest running children's festival in Australia - specifically August 22nd to August 28th this year. Book Week has been around for 64 years and each year many schools and public libraries from the land down under spend the week celebrating books, in particular Australian authors and illustrators. In a nod to the festival I have decided to blog about one of our own titles each day this month (fingers crossed that I blog each day!) and we have also reduced the prices of all our books by 10% for the whole month.

A lot of time and research goes into selecting the books for our cybershelves. Hours are spent reading critical reviews and poring through lists of the all time greats in children's literature. I am a book nut and think that as cheesy as it sounds the love of reading is one of the ultimate gifts you can give a child. I hope the books in our store reflect this.

Belle, Boo & the 1" Horseman

Our gorgeous new prints from British illustrator Mandy Sutcliffe have just arrived and they are absolutely adorable. Her classic style is a perfect fit for our store and we're delighted to have two of her prints in our collection. Mandy studied illustration at Leeds Metropolitan University, during which time she went on a university exchange trip to France. It was here that Mandy's love for illustrating children truly blossomed as she spent many an hour in the Parisian parks drawing the beautiful French children. The two prints we are carrying are Belle, Boo and the 1" Horseman and Muddy Morning. Each print is signed by Mandy and mounted ready to go into a 10" x 12" frame.

We've also added a new category to accessories called the school collection (inspired by oscar blue) which includes lots of lovely bits and bobs that should add a bit of pizzazz to a uniform without a summons to the principal's office.

This fact really tickles the fancy of my national pride...did you know 40 years ago today when man walked on the moon for the first time - "that's one small step for one, one giant leap forward for mankind" - only Australians watched the landing live. The rest of the world watched a six second delayed NASA broadcast. Love it.

I was meandering through a friend's etsy store this evening...and came across this darling ducky set. It is made up of a little hat and some leg or arm warmers. Winter is far from over down here (someone told me it was -1 last week, ridiculous!) so still plenty of time for your little miss to make the most of them. The beanie is knitted in the round, which means there are no annoying seams. It features a little duckish 'tuft' on top, a yellow, crocheted beak, and black, hand-stitched eyes. The arm/leg warmers are also knitted in the round in matching white and yellow.

I live at the Plaza", and so we are introduced to Kay Thompson's well loved story of Eloise, a garrulous incorrigible little girl living in New York City's most famous hotel. Cheeky and always funny this is a delightful read for both the children listening and the adults reading to them. Rumoured to be based on Kay Thompson's goddaughter Liza Minnelli, who lived for awhile in The Plaza with her famous mother Judy Garland.

It seems I have been waiting forever for this very special arrival (would anyone believe me if I said it's been a year?!). Really! It gives me great delight to introduce this gorgeous doll from Maileg. Isn't she wonderful! She is the first toy I knew I had to have on our cyber-shelves and the wait has been worth it. She comes complete with a Scandinavian-style wooden bed, fabric mattresses, a pillow and blanket, a little board book with the famous fairytale and and my favourite piece, the dear little crochet pea. I first came across Tres Divin a couple of years ago. I am now delighted to announce that P&P will be stocking some of Fran's beautiful range. The striped ribbon and pram tags are so sweet for gifts for new babies. I base my little sets on the premis that most people have or can get their hands on white wrapping paper. Add the beautiful ribbon and gift tag and the result, well, it's tres divin!

THE KNITTING CLUB

Last week, after many kind invitations, I finally went 'round for a cuppa with a group of crafty gals (and no, I'm not referring to their natures!) who have a weekly appointment with each other and their knitting needles. This time the gathering was hosted by good friend and master-knitter, Tish. After downing a cup of hot tea and talking and laughing for a couple of hours I decided that this week, I will purchase a very stylish set of bamboo knitting needles (I don't know if they're any better or worse than the traditional grey plastic but they look fabulous) and become a bona fide member! And just for the record, who better to teach me how to spin yarn than someone who has launcher her own range of knitted goodies, check her out at Artish.

Very excited about these sweet earrings and brooches being added to our collection today. They come to us from Made by White, the Australian label started by Sydney sisters Lyndsay and Kelly White after they decided to combine their design and retail backgrounds with (in their words) "mad shopping addictions". I'm glad they did.

Well, after being coerced into the 21st century by a number of friends who assure me that anyone who's anyone has a blog (I don't even know that I'm sure what it's short for??), I am fearfully posting my first entry, crossing my fingers and hoping for the best!

Being the obsessive perfectionist that I am, the only way I will survive something like this is to do it without rules, without one rule in particular actually - no expectation of regular posts! Of course, I will be primarily sharing news about my online store, The Princess & The Pea, which is an emporium of classic and stylish bits & bobs for little people. I finally (and by finally I mean, it has been two loooong years in the making) opened in June this year and have been very excited by the response. As well as for the store though, I think I will also use this as a creative outlet to collate a collection of things that I love, in every shape and form...who knows, it may turn out to be more relaxing than daunting?
